Boom Tech: The Biggest Addition

The most talked-about feature at the event was something called Boom Tech. While I don't necessarily love the name, it's a feature that's worth discussing. Boom Tech is essentially a heavy physics-based tackling system that EA Sports has introduced for Madden 25. Initially, I wasn't sold on it, but after seeing various footage and explanations, it started to make sense.


Tackling and Physics

Tackling has been mostly solid in Madden over the last few years, but there have been issues with pursuit angles. Boom Tech aims to enhance tackling by making it more physics-driven. It's a data-driven system that considers timing, momentum, weight, speed, strength, and player ratings to determine the outcomes of one-on-one ball carrier impacts and subsequent animations. This means you'll see wild outcomes based on these factors, especially in mismatches like Derrick Henry in the open field against a smaller defensive back.


The New Hit Stick Mechanic

The hit stick has also received a significant update. Inspired by MLB The Show's perfect-perfect hitting mechanic, Madden 25 introduces a timing-based mechanic for the hit stick. This change aims to reward players for their timing, approach angle, and the ratings of the player they're controlling. Personally, I struggled with the new mechanic at first, but it's clear that it's designed to reduce reliance on the hit stick alone. You'll need to use other tackle types, like normal and dive tackles, in combination with the hit stick.


Ball Carrier Balance and Recovery

On the offensive side, Madden 25 introduces a ball carrier balance and recovery system. Unlike the stumble mechanic from previous years, this system determines specific Boom Tech branching animations based on the quality of the hit and the ratings of the players involved. This means that staying upright after a hit and recovering quickly to continue running upfield is now more dynamic and realistic.


Signature Running Styles

Another exciting addition is the inclusion of signature running styles for key players. You'll notice unique running animations for players like Isaiah Pacheco, Christian McCaffrey, and Saquon Barkley. This adds a layer of authenticity to the game, making each player's movements feel more true to life.


Juke Stick Overhaul

The big sweeping juke animation from last year is gone, replaced by a new juke stick system that allows for more varied and dynamic movements. You can chain jukes together, combining different angles and modifiers to create some truly spectacular highlights. This new system feels easy to pick up but difficult to master, adding a much-needed skill gap to the game.


Quarterback and Offensive Line Improvements

Quarterbacks now have signature pre-snap animations, adding to the realism and authenticity of the game. Additionally, EA Sports has tweaked the speed of quarterback dropbacks to improve pocket containment and overall gameplay flow. This, combined with over 500 new blocking animations, makes the offensive line play more consistent and realistic.


Defensive Enhancements

The defensive switch stick from College Football 25 makes its way into Madden 25. This feature allows for more precise and strategic defensive play, making it easier to cover various routes and frustrate opponents. Another new addition is the spectacular catch mechanic, which offers a high-risk, high-reward option for making incredible catches in the right situations.


Presentation and Commentary

One of the first things you'll notice in Madden 25 is the new score bug, which has moved from the top to the bottom of the screen. This change may take some getting used to, but it ultimately provides a cleaner and more modern look. EA Sports has also revamped the crowd noise and on-field sound effects, adding a layer of immersion to the game.


The biggest presentation change, however, is the introduction of three separate play-by-play teams. Alongside the long-standing duo of Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis, you'll now hear commentary from Mike Tirico and Greg Olsen, as well as Kate Scott and Brock Huard. This rotation of commentary teams aims to keep the audio experience fresh and engaging, especially in franchise mode.


Teambuilder and Ranked Mode

One of the most exciting new features in Madden 25 is the introduction of Teambuilder. This long-awaited addition allows you to design your own team using a suite of customization tools. You can upload your own logos, personalize uniforms, helmets, and fields, and even create alternate uniforms. Once your team is ready, you can import them into franchise mode or download and use other custom teams from the community.


The ranked mode also sees some significant changes. EA Sports has implemented tweaks and enhancements to matchmaking, taking into account your division and playstyle. The goal is to reach the elite top 100, providing a competitive edge for those who excel in head-to-head play.


Final Thoughts

Madden 25 brings a host of exciting new features and improvements to the gameplay and presentation. From the physics-driven Boom Tech tackling system to the revamped juke stick, signature running styles, and enhanced quarterback play, there's a lot to look forward to.
