Step 1: Complete the Main Story
You need to finish the main storyline with at least one character on either World Tier 1 (Adventurer) or World Tier 2 (Veteran). Both tiers provide the same loot pool, though Tier 2 offers a slight challenge increase.
Step 2: Clear the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon
Once you complete the main story, a quest will appear on your map, marking the Capstone Dungeon at the Cathedral of Light in Kyovashad.
This dungeon is only accessible on World Tier 2 and is recommended for characters at levels 50-70 due to the powerful bosses and elite enemies found within.
Equip your best Diablo 4 Legendary items and Aspects tailored to your character's class for the best chance of success.
What Changes in World Tier 3 - Nightmare
Enemy Scaling and Buffs:
In Nightmare difficulty, enemies range from levels 50 to 70 and gain an ability to pierce 20% of your character's resistances. This makes even lower-level enemies significantly more dangerous.
Enemies yield 100% more experience and 15% more gold, helping your character level up faster and gather more D4 gold.
Access to Unique and Sacred Gear:
Sacred and Unique items, a tier above Legendaries, become accessible, offering new ways to strengthen your character.
Special world events called Helltides also begin to appear, providing additional chances for rare gear drops and other rewards.
Nightmare Sigils and Dungeons:
Nightmare Sigils drop in this tier, which allow you to transform standard dungeons into Nightmare Dungeons for increased loot, experience, and enhanced challenges.
Season 6 Update: New Difficulty Settings Replace World Tiers
In Season 6, Blizzard has revamped the difficulty system, replacing World Tiers with four core difficulties that can be selected at any time:
Normal: Default difficulty for standard play.
Hard: Yields 75% more XP and gold.
Expert: Yields 125% more XP and gold.
Penitent: Yields 175% more XP and gold.
You can switch difficulties in any major city shrine, without needing to return to the Shrine of Inarius in Kyovashad. Higher difficulties increase enemy aggression, health, and damage, offering a greater challenge.
Torment Tiers: A New Layer of Challenge Beyond Penitent
Once a character reaches Level 60, The Pit mega-dungeon unlocks in Cerrigar. This dungeon offers four additional Torment Tiers, each providing increasing rewards but with severe defensive penalties:
Torment 1: Provides 300% more XP and gold, with a moderate reduction in armor and resistances.
Torment 2: Provides 400% more XP and gold, with a significant reduction in armor and resistances.
Torment 3: Provides 500% more XP and gold, with severe armor and resistance penalties.
Torment 4: The highest tier, offering 600% more XP and gold but maximum reductions to armor and resistances.
Each tier requires clearing progressively higher levels within The Pit, and each layer introduces increasingly challenging enemies and rewards.
With these revamped difficulty options, Diablo 4 allows players to engage with challenging content and rewards at every level of play.
