Jul-16-2024 PST Diablo4

Expansion

Diablo 4's first paid expansion, Vessel of Hatred, is set to launch in October, bringing a wealth of new content to the game. The highlight of this expansion is undoubtedly the introduction of the Spiritborn class. As this is the first time the Spiritborn appears in the franchise, there's been a lot of speculation about its abilities. However, we can make some educated guesses based on available information.

Anticipation Builds at Xbox Games Showcase

During an action-packed Xbox Games Showcase, Blizzard made a significant impact with trailers for two major expansions. While World of Warcraft's The War Within played on nostalgia, Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred trailer stood out with its stunning visuals and sound design. The trailer depicted the tumultuous relationship between Neyrelle and Mephisto's Soulstone as she seeks a way to destroy the demon while fleeing across Nahantu.

Spiritborn: A Class Born from the Jungle

Vessel of Hatred introduces Nahantu as a new playable zone in Diablo 4, the home of the Spiritborn. Players will navigate this hostile terrain with the help of recruitable mercenaries, new gear, abilities, a PvE mode, and more. The Spiritborn class is the main attraction, and its introduction gives some clues about its gameplay mechanics.

Leaked Information on Spiritborn Skills

A significant source of information on the Spiritborn's skills comes from an internal database leak discovered by Diablo 4 fans in late 2023. Although game design is fluid and the information is not final, the accuracy of other leaked features lends credibility to these details. The leak describes four schools of magic used by the Spiritborn: Sky, Soil, Forest, and Plains. Notable skills include:

Bat Swarm

Spore Pod

Dreadful Spiders

Vine Hook

Razor Wing

Viper Pit

These skills suggest a resemblance to the Witch Doctor class, which also originates from the Torajan Jungles of Nahantu. However, while Witch Doctors use soul magic akin to necromancy, the Spiritborn seems to draw from natural magic, with abilities that are more druidic in nature.

Historical Inspirations

The concept art for the Spiritborn provides further insight into the class's identity. Featuring bestial armor, rosette tattoos, and wielding a rough-hewn glaive, many have compared the Spiritborn to the legendary Aztec Jaguar Warriors. It's unclear how much inspiration Blizzard will take from history, but the Spiritborn's design hints at a strong Central American influence. With two pet classes already in the game, the Spiritborn is unlikely to rely heavily on pets, but a big cat or eagle companion would be a fitting addition.

Exciting Times Ahead for Diablo Fans

Diablo fans have much to look forward to. With Season 4 receiving positive feedback, Vessel of Hatred's exciting preview, and the resurgence of the ARPG genre, the future of the series looks bright. Despite a rocky start, Diablo 4 is on track for a major turnaround, similar to Diablo 3. Blizzard has demonstrated a knack for addressing player feedback and improving their games after initial missteps.
