Beginner Tank Guide for Throne and Liberty

Why Follow This Guide?

By following along, you’ll not only copy my recommendations but also understand the reasoning behind them. This knowledge will ensure that by the time you hit Level 50, you won’t be lost, but instead well-equipped with the fundamentals of tanking. Plus, you'll be able to explain your choices to others confidently, rather than simply following a guide blindly. I won’t cover Tier 2 gear in this guide, as the game is rapidly evolving and end-game equipment may change by the time we reach Tier 2. Instead, I’ll focus on up-to-date recommendations based on the latest big patch, which occurred just before the global release.

Getting Started: The Basics

When you first enter the game, you'll be guided through the main story and side quests. Here's what you need to know:

1. Adventure Codex (Main Story Quests): This is your primary way of progressing. Simply press Escape, go to the Codex (or press J), and focus on the main quest.

2. Side Quests: In the early Laandan Region, you can skip most side quests, as they provide little experience. However, once you reach the Stone Guard Region and Vienta Village, the side quests become worth doing because they offer significant experience.

3. Headgear Choice: Early on, you’ll choose between different headgear. Don't worry too much here—pick whatever you like, as you’ll replace it soon enough.

Key Gear Decisions: Sword and Shield First

Once you complete the first chapter of the main quest, you'll be offered a choice of weapons. Always, always choose the sword and shield (SNS) weapon. Here’s why:

· Shield Block Chance: Higher rarity weapons provide better shield block chances, which is critical for tanking and mitigation.

· Quick Replacement: You’ll soon get a blue-quality SNS to replace your starting gear, so this choice is short-lived but important.

Avoid the Wand for Now

While the wand may seem appealing, you should avoid it at the start. The green wand you’ll eventually get (Aesthetic’s Magic Scepter) isn’t craftable, meaning you can’t add traits to it early on. You’ll be much better off with the SNS until you can craft better gear.

Crafting Gear Along the Way

By the time you reach Chapter 2 of the main quest, you’ll start collecting lithographs (blueprints) to craft green weapons and armor. Here's the breakdown:

· Weapon Lithographs: Use these to craft better green wands, which can eventually be improved with traits.

· Armor Lithographs: Focus on crafting your combat soldier’s cloak first. This cape provides hit, which is crucial when facing higher-level enemies due to their evasion mechanics.

· Accessory Lithographs: These will come later, and while they are useful, you don’t need to rush them.

Armor Choices: Prioritize the Cloak

Capes are hard to come by early on, so it's essential to craft a green cape with traits like max health and skill damage resistance. Even though it’s green, this cloak will provide more effective stats than early blue or purple options.

· Why prioritize hit? In the early game, you’ll often be fighting mobs that are several levels higher. This cape helps compensate for their natural evasion, ensuring your attacks and abilities land more consistently.

· Longevity of the cloak: You won’t replace this cape for a while, as purple or blue options early on don’t offer enough beneficial traits compared to a well-crafted green cape.

Avoid the Expensive Trap

Many players make the mistake of rushing to replace green items with higher-rarity gear. While it's tempting to equip blue or purple capes early on, many of them lack the crucial traits like max health. Don’t fall into this trap! Craft a solid green cape with the traits you need and stick with it until a genuinely better option becomes available.

Progression Through Main Quests

As you continue through Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, you’ll gather more lithographs and craft better gear. Here's what to prioritize:

· Crafting Wands and Shields: As soon as you get weapon lithographs, craft your wand and apply traits.

· Armor Crafting: Focus on your cape first, followed by other armor pieces that enhance your tanking capabilities.

· Skill Books: Don't forget to complete skill book quests as you progress. These are essential for improving your abilities.

Final Tips for Smooth Progression

· Take your time: Don't rush into new gear just because it’s of a higher rarity. Focus on traits and utility rather than rarity early on.

· Prioritize quests in Stone Guard: This region offers valuable experience and will help you level up faster.

· Craft wisely: Use your lithographs strategically, focusing on gear that provides lasting value, like your cloak and wand.

By following these steps, you’ll not only progress efficiently, but you’ll also understand the reasoning behind each gear choice. This will set you up for success as you approach higher levels and eventually earn your Tier 2 gear.
